The research interests of the molecular biologist Dr. Tobias Stoeger and his group “Dynamics of Pulmonary Inflammation” at the Helmholtz Zentrum München are focused on the biology of alveolar macrophages and mechanisms of sterile pulmonary inflammation due to inhalation of nanoparticles. Current main research topics of his group are: i) the dynamics of lung macrophages during the course of pulmonary inflammation, ii) impact of particle characteristics on mechanisms of particle-cell interactions and iii) the use of nanocarriers for pulmonary drug delivery. Methods of investigation are based on molecular biological methods, alveolar tissue culture models and controlled animal exposures with special emphasis on reporter cell systems and reporter mouse strains.
