Bengt Fadeel is a Full Professor of Medical Inflammation Research at Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm, and Head of the Molecular Toxicology Unit at the Institute of Environmental Medicine (2009-present). He received his M.D. and Ph.D. at Karolinska Institutet in 1997 and 1999, respectively, and his board certification at the Karolinska University Hospital in 2001. He previously served as Vice Chairman of the Institute of Environmental Medicine, Karolinska Institutet (2009-2013). He is a Fellow of the Academy of Toxicological Sciences (ATS) (elected in 2012, recertified in 2018), and Chair of the scientific panel of the national nanosafety platform, SweNanoSafe (since 2016). His research is focused on hazard assessment of engineered nanomaterials as well as on basic mechanisms of inflammation and cell death. He was awarded the national Environmental Medicine Prize in 2011 for research on the risks and opportunities of engineered nanomaterials. He has been involved in several EU-funded projects on nanosafety in FP7 and H2020 and he is a member of the Graphene Flagship project (2013-2023). He currently serves as Chief Editor of the nanotoxicology section of Frontiers in Toxicology.
